Saying Sadaqa Allaahul Adheem is a Bid'ah

Many people have the habit of ending a recitation from the Qur'aan with the words "Sadaqa Allaahul Adheem (Almighty Allaah has spoken the truth)," but this has no basis in Islaam because the Prophet (salla?Allaahu ?alayhi wa sallam) did not do it, nor was it the custom of the Sahaabah (radiAllaahu 'anhum ajma'een), and it was unknown among the Taabi'een (the generation after the Sahaabah).

This custom arose in later times because some reciters would say these words, on the basis of the aayah,

"Say: Allaah has spoken the truth" [Soorah Aal 'Imraan (3):95]

and people liked this. But this istihsaan (being liked) should be rejected, because if this was really something good, the Prophet (salla?Allaahu ?alayhi wa sallam), the Sahaabah and the Taabi'een - the salaf or first and best generations of the Ummah - would not have neglected to do it.

The aayah,

"Say: Allaah has spoken the truth" [Soorah Aal 'Imraan (3):95]

does not mean that these words should be said at the end of any reading or recitation. If that were the case, He (Allaah) would have said, "When you finish reading, say 'Allaah has spoken the truth,'" just as He said, "So when you want to recite the Qur'aan, seek refuge with Allaah from Shaytaan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one)." [Soorah an-Nahl (16):98]

The aayah which the innovators use to support their practice of saying "Sadaqa Allaah" after reciting Qur'aan was actually revealed in the context of confirming what was said about how all food had been lawful to Bani Israa'eel except what Israa'eel had made unlawful for himself.

Allaah said,

"Say (O Muhammad salla?Allaahu ?alayhi wa sallam): 'Bring here the Tawraat (Torah) and recite it, if you are truthful.' Then, after that, whosoever shall invent a lie against Allaah, such shall indeed be the Dhaalimoon (disbelievers). Say (O Muhammad salla?Allaahu ?alayhi wa sallam), 'Allaah has spoken the truth; follow the religion of Ibraaheem Haneefa (Islaamic monotheism, i.e., he used to worship Allaah alone), and he was not of al-Mushrikoon (polytheists).'" [Soorah Aal 'Imraan (3):93-95]

If this aayah meant that these words should be said after reciting from the Qur'aan, the first one to know and do this would have been the Messenger of Allaah (salla?Allaahu ?alayhi wa sallam). Because this is not the case, we know that this is not what was meant.

In conclusion, therefore, saying "Sadaqa Allaahul Adheem" after reciting Qur'aan is an innovation, and the Muslim should not say it.

But believing that Allaah has spoken the truth is obligatory, and whoever disbelieves or doubts the truth of what Allaah has said is a kaafir who is outside of the pale of Islam. We seek refuge with Allaah from that.

If a person says "Allaah has spoken the truth" on certain occasions, such as when something He has foretold comes to pass, affirming the truth of what He has said, then this is permissible, because something similar has been reported in the Sunnah. The Prophet (Salla?Allaahu ?alayhi wa sallam) was giving a speech, and al-Hasan and al-Husayn came along, so he came down from the minbar, picked them up and put them in front of him, then he said,

"Indeed Allaah has spoken the truth: "Your wealth and your children are only a trial..." [Soorah at-Taghaabun 64:15]"

Barakallahu feek ya akhi,
Its a pity that many Muslims prefer to practise ibadah from what seemed popular and glamorised, especially this saying is widespread in Quran reading competition televised in most Muslim countries, and also in CDs and mass medias.
Hopefully with this sahih information, they realised that the Prophet Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam and the sahabat radhiallahu 'anhum jamie'an are examples par excellence not to be exceeded in terms of understanding and practising the Quran and Sunnah, Wallahu A'lam.

Thanks for the information and JazakAllah

I always used to think why we need to say SadaqAllah ul Adheem .. when it is so obvious.. and I used to think are we trying to convince someone/ourselves that Allah says the truth.

However, I have kept on practicing it as it is so common.

however, can you reconfirm it is a Biddah .. because I often listen to the Radio in Jeddah while driving (FM 89.9) and very scholarly people present on this channel. i believe this is Saudia's official religious channel and I have heard some people saying the same on the radio as well.

As I believe 89.9 is a channel which differentiates from Sunnah and Biddah, I am a bit confused.

Thanks

My apologies syeikh Umair, i believe your confusion reminds me of mine once, and many others in many Muslim countries at present - we cannot see an elephant at a palm's distance right in front of us, but we can see clearly a mosquito across the ocean.

I mean the sahih facts are painstakingly derived by our Ahli Sunnah learned scholars for our benefit, to choose and practise what is Sunnah, and to stop or discard any bid'ah, syirik, ta'asub, syiah, sufi and likeminded unIslamic practices falsely attributed to Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam, and yet one is still not convinced bec he sees some seemingly learned scholars still practising those innovations.

Doesn't that mean one places another human being above what is taught by Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam? (Surah 4:65, 24:63)

If we push our luck too far for the answer to your question, I worry your FM 89.9 will be closed down, just like the dismissal of Syeikh Saad bin Naser al-Shethri for criticising the mixing of men and women during classes at KASTU Univ.

And the papers labelled such Ahli Sunnah scholar as 'hardline cleric', such path of Sunnah as 'anti reforms' or 'intolerance', as though Islam is not progressive, Subhanallah !

1. So let us be grateful that your beloved Saudi Arabia is the country with the least amount of bid'ah, syirik, ta'asub, blind taqlid, syiah, sufi and other such unIslamic practices widespread in other Muslim countries.

2. Let us be grateful that Saudi Arabia is still the main bastion of the AlQuran & Sunnah according to the understanding and practices of the righteous prdecessors (see www.islamIQ.sg Our Objectives).

3. Let us choose between authentic and fabricated teachings that are presented.

4. And let us be grateful that there are genuine and truthful Ahli Sunnah scholars still around to disseminate the authentic knowledge of Islam, be grateful by making the right choice, not innovate another dubious question, Jazakallahu khairan.

Whatever the Radio does in this area is a major error and no one is more shocked than myself due to their consistence on using this expression even though there is a Fatwaa from the permanent committee of issuing verdicts that this act is an innovation. The radio station is not infallible and their actions do not render anything lawful which Islaam has ruled as a Bid'ah. And Allaah knows best.

thanks guys and jazakumullah...

Nuruddin .. brother .. I think u got a bit too emotional .. I genuinely only wanted to confirm ... U dont know I much i appreciate the fact that Saudia despite constant efforts from devil and his followers is still a place where there is still so much authentic knowledge and guidance... and u dont know how much blessed I feel to have listened to some of the speeches explaining biddah and Sunnah.

Uptill today . i thought 89.9 was reviewed and monitored and only authentic messages were generated.. now on.. I will take whatever I hear on this radio channel with a pinch of salt as well.. ..

Never intended to ask a dubious question!! Apologies if I hurt you or anyone else by that.

Waiyyaka bro Umair, agreed, but you can only undertstand and excuse my demeanour if you can see the gross misrepresentation of Islam in my beloved Singapore ( and neighbours Malaysia & Indonesia) by bid'ah, syirik, ta'asub, syi'ah, sufi, blind taqlid and other unislamic practices widespread with full endorsement by our local recognised "ulama's" mostly from Azhar Univ, only those who follow the manhaj salaf ( minority here ) can filter them out insyaALLAH, Allahul Musta'an.

If you like a glimpse of what I meant, I'll be glad to show thru my email binsajen@live.com, barakallahu feek.

I can understand what you mean... I myself have seen alot of that in Pakistan and India. When I go back and try to convince people about leaving the biddah practices, it is very hard both for me and them to accept it.

I get replies like...

"If so many people are doing something in this way .. there must be some authentication"

When I quote Sahih hadiths ... this is what I usually get ..

"You are not qualified to narrate hadith and interpret the meaning" .. While I may agree to this in some cases.. some hadith are plane balck and white .. there is no need to interpret.. they are just giving the message...

Other common replies are..
"You have changed your religion"
"The Wahabis have converted you as well"
"How much research have you done to change things the way we practice"
..and so on.

But I am still trying ... every now and then I do find one or 2 persons .. that take what I tell them seriously. So there is still hope. smile

Then i can join the hajj group and directly go to mina. my clarification is after umrah is there any obligation to stay in makkah or i can come back to jeddah

this is really a good article on Bid'ah, but how are we to know this sort of things as bidah especially when learned scholars(?) too indulge in this kind of things? with this article i grow even more suspicious of what I have heard and learnt from so called scholars of islam. Moreover why is it becoming so difficult for ordinary muslims to believe or not to believe in some things that pass as authentic? i am grateful to sister who wrote this article.
